Wu ALthough I normally tend to stay with the Linksys/Cisco brand when it comes to networking devices, I have to say that I am somewhat surprised and pleased to find that D-Link seems to be improving and in some cases, outperforming Linksys. I needed a fast and easy way to extend my wireless internet to approx. 1000 ft and decided to try a variety of solutions to see what worked best. I initially tried using some Linksys range extenders (WRE54G) which soon proved to be a networking nightmare. The units did work although I had to reset them at least once every other day. Next, I tried using some Hawking range extenders such as the 15db corner antenna and the omni-directional antenna. Both seem to work fine however the range was still insufficient and placing multiple pole antennas would detract from the outside appearance of the building. Finally, I tried this D-link antenna and while this unit is expensive, it is well-made and appears to be very durable. With the built-in heater system, and weather-resistant casing, I'm also able to mount the antenna outside and not worry about the internal components being damaged from the cold temperatures. I will see after a couple of weeks whether it can withstand some light snowfall. Setting up this antenna/access point is relatively easy if you know networking basics. For users who are not too familiar with setting up static IP addresses, there may be an initial learning curve involved with this device. If you know what you're doing, you should be able to get this unit up and running in about 10-15 minutes. Unlike Netgear and some of the new cheaply made Linksys/D-Link routers and range extenders, this unit hasn't needed a reset and hasn't crashed or locked up on us in the two weeks it has been running. Pros: Well-constructed weather-resistant metallic casing, strong signals, STABLE, comes with all the mounting equipment you need including a 50 meter heavy-duty ethernet cable, looks a lot more professional and inobtrusive than the Hawking-brand range extenders Cons: Pricey (though you do get what you pay for), setup may be somewhat difficult for those who don't have much networking experience (there is no automatic install CD like the ones included with routers). I would have liked to have the ethernet port perhaps on the back or side of the unit rather than on the bottom because it's difficult to prop this thing up on a table with the ethernet cable in the way - in the event you decide not to mount it on a wall or ledge. Contrary to what D-link may tell you, you do not need to have a D-link router in order for this to work. This antenna connects to almost any router (I'm currently using a Linksys WRT54G). There is an extra step of configuration if you choose not to use D-link but if you know how to setup static IP addresses, you'll be up and running in no time. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Works as advertised By D. Ditzel This product works. I was skeptical because of the D-link brand, but this thing is great. I installed it to allow wireless @ our marina, and we get full signal over the entire area, just under 2 acres. The unit itself is made very well, everything you need comes in the box, POE, antenna's, cables, lightning protection, all there.. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good company, good product. By Rodrigo I have purchased 3 of these antennas for my small business. I am very happy with them. Can recommend. See all 3 customer reviews...

Flynn I am computer literate and live in an apartment that hates any number of wireless frequencies. The other reviews for this router made it appear to be a good compromise - difficulty in set-up in exchange for awesome signal strength. Unfortunately I was unable to verify this as I never made it through the "set-up" process. The included documentation is sketchy, poorly laid-out, and very obtuse, and there is no simple walk-through for a home set-up. I've set up wireless networks before and have built my own computer, but I was completely defeated by this device. I do not recommend it except perhaps for the networking professional. Honestly, DO NOT BUY this product if that doesn't describe you. I am only giving it two stars because it does seem to have good signal strength - and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to return it to DBROTH. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Rock Solid. By William R. Hill It's challenging to setup, but once you get it, its a hot rod. Solid strong connection. Stable & Fast. Powerful signal. Works perfect in a 2600sqft two story house, extending even outside to poolside AND even better in a 10,000sqft building that I've worked in. Amazing range. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not functioning pretty good in WISP mode By F.D. I purchased this router to connect to my other wireless router which is far from one of my desktop computers and my TV. It only connects to my other router when it is next room and signal strength is over 45 otherwise it won't connect although the AP is shown in the list! Even I tried 3 different long range antennas to boost the receiving signals, but got worse and signals dropped even more. My old laptop wireless adapter has much better signal reception! I like this router because it has linux on and you can control it however you want, but unfortunately it is useless for me in the range I need. Almost paid 50 bucks with shipping but have to toss it into my closet and go for a long wiring! See all 5 customer reviews...

SlingLink TURBO W1 Ethernet over Power Adapter

If you're like most people, you don't have an Ethernet jack right next to your television. The SlingLink TURBO brings network connectivity to any electrical wall outlet. It can connect your compatible DISH receiver, Slingbox, game console, DVR, computer or anything with an Ethernet jack. And it's compatible with any wired internet router. Most DISH Network receivers have SlingLink technology built in, so you only need one SlingLink plugged into the wall near your router to connect your receiver to the internet. For your computer or other devices you will need a second SlingLink pluggeed in wherever you need network access.

Ragland I purchased this for the pc in a room that I didn't want to run an ethernet cable to and the pc was an older pc for my kids so it didn't have a USB 2.0 port to work with a wireless device. This adapter works great and is truly plug and play. I already had one to connect my 2 DishNetwork DVR receivers to, so I knew it would be pretty good. Keep in mind that if you are new to using HomeLink devices you will need to purchase at least 2 initially, one for your device and one to connect to your router, unless you have DishNetwork receivers which have the capability built into the receiver and all you will need is one to connect to your router. 12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Does exactly what it's supposed to By sierraseven I have had my home network on Slinglinks for a couple of years. Slingbox, Slingcatcher on my bedroom TV (don't have to pay the satellite company extra), wired internet in the garage where the wireless won't reach, as well as TV on an old laptop from the Slingbox, all very easy to set up. Sling makes stuff that just works, always easy to set up, and you don't have to be an IT geek to do it. I purchased this new Slinglink because I dropped one on a hard floor from about 4 feet while re-arranging some TV/DVD equipment, and it wouldn't work afterward. Yes, I tried smacking it again - no dice. But it was a good thing, because the new Slinglink Turbo is faster, and this was the connection to my Slingbox - eliminated the occasional stutter I had seen on my Slingcatcher-linked TV. If you are interested in powerline networking in your home, go with Sling equipment. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. SlingLink Works Like A Charm By C. Milliken After so many problems with the wireless router provided by my ISP, I was considering wiring my house with a CAT5e network. I woke up one morning and saw the SlingLink box DISH Network had installed to allow my set top boxes to communicate with my router blinking away. It dawned on me that using a few more of these things I should be able to do the same for all of the computers in my house. So I purchased one to test my theory and it worked like a charm. I decided to purchase two more, including one for my Roku set top box. No more dropped signals, no more slowness, and no crawling around in the attic to wire the whole house. The wiring is already done! The SlingLink boxes use your home's electrical wiring to communicate with each other. You'll need at least two SlingLink boxes, one for the router and one for each computer or other device you want to connect to the internet (recent DISH customers probably already have one on the router since their set top boxes have SlingLink built in). Plug one directly into the wall (DO NOT plug it into a surge protector, it won't work) and run the included network cable to your router. Plug another one in and run the network cable to your computer or other device's network adapter. Your router treats anything on SlingLink as if it were plugged directly into it. Nothing else to set up. It's easy, fast and works great! See all 22 customer reviews...

Macfarlane This is a really nice, really small device that can act as an access point (transmit a wireless signal), or as a station (receive a wireless signal), which is also known as a "client-bridge". Confusion abounds though regarding the specifications of this cool device... First off, the photo in the Amazon listing is that of a Ubiquiti Nanostation. The Picostation is much smaller and has an external antenna connector. I chose this model not just because of its small size, but also because it has that antenna connector. This makes the unit MUCH more flexible than a model with only a built-in antenna, because you can swap to an antenna with more gain than the provided 6dBi one if need be, or use a directional antenna rather than the supplied 360 degree omni antenna. Or you can simply fit it with a higher gain omni. Furthermore, there is confusion about how powerful the Picostation is. Some descriptions rate the output at 100 milli-watts, while other descriptions put it at 1,000 milli-watts. The Ubiquity website adds to the confusion with a poor link to the product page. It is here: [...]. Per the Ubiquiti datasheet for the Picostation2, it rates the power output at up to 100mw (though at the highest connection speed of 54Mb/s this figure actually drops to 32mw). The claims of up to 1,000mw I believe is either a typo or it has to do with "Effective Radiated Power" (ERP), which is the actual power generated, and varies according to several factors, primarily the choice of antenna. If you take the amount of power the Picostation generates at its fastest connection speed of 54Mb/s, which again is 32mw, and multiply that by the gain you get from the supplied 6dBi antenna (there is a formula for this), you get 125mw of effective power. However, if you instead mate the Picostation with an easily found 15dBi antenna you get, count 'em, 1,000mw of effective (actual) radiated power. That's why I like external antenna connectors. ;> Having said all that, "power" is just one aspect of getting a fast, reliable wireless connection. Too many variables to state here, but as a real life example the Picostation I purchased replaced an Engenius brand wireless unit rated at 400MW. Both have acted as a "client bridge" (a receiving station connected to a computer), receiving a wireless signal from a 400MW Access Point with a high gain directional antenna. The Picostation slipped into the environment without incident, with the supplied antenna, even though it's theoretically less powerful than the unit it replaced. Another point of confusion is with the various Picostation models. There seem to be three. This one being reviewed is simply the "Picostation2". This is a 2.4Ghz device that works on the wireless "b" and "g" standards (2.4Mhz). There is also the "M2HP" version, which utilizes Ubiquiti's proprietary AirMax wireless technology. You can achieve speeds up to 150Mb/s throughput, but it requires an Airmax capable model on both ends of the link. No need to spend the extra money for this model unless you meet that criteria. Finally, there is a 5Ghrz model that operates with the "a" standard (5mhz). Some, but not all, wireless cards in laptops can receive "a" signals as well as "b" and "g" signals. All said and done, I am a big fan of the Ubiquiti line, and as a consultant I have switched to this line exclusively for my client's wireless networking needs. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Feature rich, tiny, POE access point/router By G. Traveis I'll second J. Macfarlane's review. This device is excellent in size and function, but it's not the kind of unit that comes with a CD that automatically walks you through setup. So, if you are not familiar with Wifi setup, this may not be for you. The working documentation is all on the ubnt.com Wiki site. The web interface for the unit's configuration

Latest version has no fan and new case By weberm Contrary to what many of the reviews say here, the latest version (3.0) of the switch has been redesigned without a fan. The switch is 100% silent. Also, the pictures on a lot of sites of the switch are old. To see the new case go to the linksys site. 19 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Loud and lousy tech support By S. Jacobs I purchased this switch in November 2005 and seemed to significantly improve my network throughput. I've been purchasing Linksys products for years and have never had any problems from any of them. Like many I quickly found that the switches fan was quite loud. Since it was in a room with 5 or so computers, the noise didn't really bother me that much. The switch did its job and that's all I needed it to do. Over the past few months, the fan has gotten progressively louder with a pleasing rattling noise as well. Obviously, the fan was approaching the end of it's sad little life. Then last week, the loud fan noise ceased. The sad little fan had breathed its last. When I touched the case, I was astonished how hot the switch was running. Obviously, something needed to happen. There was a very real chance of fire. Now the real fun began. Yesterday, I placed a call to Linksys' tech support. After waiting on hold for 45 minutes, I spoke with a tech support person (Let's call him 29845). I was given a case number that was supposed to allow me to return the unit. Sadly, the number was rejected as invalid by the RMA "support" web site. Next, I tried their "live chat" "support" tool online. This time the wait was only 40 minutes and I spoke (typed?) with a very nice, but ineffective person (25174)who promised that I would be sent an email with a case number once I disconnected from the chat session. Of course, that number never came. Lovely. Another hour of my life gone. The next morning, I called the Tech support line. Joy! They picked up right away. I spoke with a gentleman named 43406 who was very nice, but was obviously not a deep thinker. He thought that it was very important that I needed to tell him who my ISP was and what my OS was before he could consider the issue with my bad fan. After a while it became apparent that he was in over his head, he placed me on hold so he could consult with his manager. After about 20 minutes, he picked up again, made some noises that sounded like he was scratching himself with the receiver then hung up on me. At this point, I was feeling very "special"... I've never really ever had to deal with Linksys before for support issues. I'm not sure I have the constitution to ever try again. Their products are generally pretty good. Since I usually never need tech support, I'm usually pretty happy with their products. This type of "support" is appallingly bad though. They've wasted a couple hours of my life and left me rather disgusted. If you're willing to purchase any of their products, you should probably consider them throwaway items, because you're not likely to get ANY competent support from them. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. How to fix this LOUD Beast! By copper_piping This thing is so LOUD!!, it never should have been put on shelves for sale. Its absolutely atrocious! Its insane! Its horrible! Simple to use and it works By Victor I want to be able to view and control my IP cameras installed around my home when I am away. The IP camera I have comes with a web interface for realtime viewing from a PC in the local network. This SSL VPN router allows me to connect back to the web interface of my IP camera when I am at work. The out of the box experience is good - I have no trouble in setting it up and connect to the internet with my cable modem. After I changed my default password, created a few user accounts for my family members, and enabled the Remote Management, I put the device into test. First, I have to find the ip address that my cable company assigned to me and the ip address of my camera given by the router - all available from the router administration web interface at http://192.168.1.1. When I was at work the next day, I was able to get to the internet address of my SSL router and connect to my home network within a minute. Just want to share my success story with the community that might have the same need. The QoS feature may come to rescue when I am working from home, using my company's VPN, and my kids are playing bandwidth extensive internet games. I have to see how well it would work. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. JUNK JUNK JUNK By T. Hagglund Installed unit 1 for a client in August. Unit was easy to configure, SSL was great (minor alterations for Vista/ 7 64-bit.) Speed was adequate. NO issues. Installed unit 2 for a client in October. Unit was easy to configure. SSL was NOT used. Speed was great. Installed unit 3 for a client in December. Unit completely died/ bricked in March. Installed unit 4 for the client in March to replace unit 3. It "worked" for a week randomly kicking the (2) client machines off the network and completely died/ bricked within (1) week. Installed unit 5 for a client in March. Unit was removed from service within 24 hours as the client reported the same issues as the client above. While it did NOT brick- it was kicking (3) machines off the network repeatedly. It was dropping packets left and right during a follow up test at our office. Unit 6 was NOT even installed/ deployed. When the unit works, it is a nice unit. Easy to configure. SSL works well and is fast. Nice design, runs cool, looks nice. *NOT rack mountable. *NOT Gigabit. None of it matters though. We have a 30% failure rate at best and a 50% failure rate at worse. *2 out of 6 still in service. 1 out of 6 not even deployed and 3 out of 6 BAD. We have decided to start moving our small business clients to the ZyXel units (ZWUSG20). Better feature set, faster units, hardware isn't "tapped out" at boot and support is better. We were hoping the Cisco Small Business (Linksys) (or whatever they would like to call this line today) would be a small step up from Linksys and have a few extra features without having to go to the expense and configuration of the commercial grade Cisco gear. We were wrong. These units couldn't even survive a couple users let alone an office of 10 or 20 or heaven forbid 30-50. It's too bad. A good router at a decent price still seems to be hard to find. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Almost Reliable By Patrick McIntyre I was looking for a router for the church that I volunteer at. I needed something that was easy to install, maintain and most importantly, reliable. The internet service was also being upgraded to cable so the router needed to handle the additional bandwidth. In the past I stayed away from Linksys products due to reliability issues but I saw the Cisco name attached to this and decided to give it a try. The router was very easy to install and setup. It integrated well in the network. We were able to get the bandwidth speed tests to match what the provider gave us. All was good. Monday, I got a call saying that the internet was down. I checked it and found nothing

A lot of camera for the money By Keep Iru At first I was a bit skeptical about this camera, a good quality outdoor, POE camera with an IR cut filter at that price seemed too good to be true. I had read some positive reviews on the Y-Cam Bullet, of which the Sharx is a rebranded version, but the Sharx version was priced even lower so I figured I'd chance it. I'm glad I did! Immediately after opening the box I was impressed with the quality. It looks and feels solid and well built. Setup was quick and easy. The image is clear and the colors are very good in day time viewing. The IR works well and I can clearly see the image at night. While the camera does support POE, the wiring harness that comes out the back of the camera contains several other connectors, for power, audio and alarm. Unfortunately these cannot be removed, so any connections you don't use will need to be secured in a weatherproof location. I suppose it was expected that all of those wires be pushed through a wall to terminate indoors, but in my case that was not possible. An outdoor electrical box was recommended by Sharx in the manual. I picked one up at the local hardware store for a few dollars and hid it as best I could. I using i-Catcher software and as this camera was not on its list of supported cameras I needed to contact Sharx support to answer a few questions about it. They emailed me back within the hour, were very knowledgeable about the product and quite helpful. Over the next several emails I asked them a lot of questions. They were always quick to respond and with complete and useful answers. Pros: Supports standard POE Clear and vivid daytime image IR lighting and cut filter makes for good night images Well built, solid, appears to be well sealed Outstanding email support Very thorough printed manual A good amount of adjustments in the menus Cons: No user installable firmware, requires Sharx support if you need to upgrade. No downloadable documentation. Don't lose the manual! Several hardwired connections on the wiring harness that have to be weatherproofed if not installed through a wall. Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase. It is an excellent camera when considering the low cost, good quality day and night images and the superb support behind it. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Best Outdoor PoE camera for the money By S. Faulk This review is for the most part a copy of the write up I did for the Sharx 3605 because I own both. I will add a few details that are relevant to the 3606 but overall it is a similar experience. A few months ago our house was broken into from a very brazen group of three robbers (punks) that backed their car into our driveway, jumped over the fence and smashed the back sliding door in order to gain entry. Luckily our home has an alarm so they quickly made their way through the house and out the front door without taking much. Our neighbor did witness the event but sadly only got to a brief description of the car and suspects. I decided it was time to take home security up a level and cover some key areas of the house with security cameras. After a lot of reading and studying, the Sharx line seemed to be a great way to start a system so I ordered one to try. When the camera arrived I followed the instructions for set up and everything went smoothly. The manual is very easy to follow and written in clear English. I had the camera configured and running on my LAN system in about 20 minutes. After initial configuration I dialed in the picture quality and basic configuration, then next step was being able to see the camera when I am away from home. I have AT&T Uverse for Internet service and the Sharx manual includes absolutely perfect instructions to configure the 2wire router so you can view the camera remotely via the Internet. Without the manual I probably would have been lost on this step but the manual made

Macfarlane I purchased 3 of these APs with the expectation to replace 3 Cisco "b" APs and drop in. The setup used Radius for authentication which is claimed to be supported in both the online info and docs. After config (the web UI constantly has problems with cookies and forced you to re-login) the system would work. One quark was the IP address field for the radius server wouldn't accept more than one character in the forms. Up and running. However, upon reboot, the WG302 loses it Radius info and then cannot authenticate a client again. SHOWSTOPPER. After logging this with Netgear support - their response is this is an unsupported config and requires premium support. While this would be fine if it was a config issue, it's not ok given they claim support for these features and this was a required feature for purchase. They give no further support now. I would HIGHLY recommend against the extra cost of this unit given it's buggy and has poor support. Config is difficult (I had to learn how to use the command line config), the upgrades are not well documented (they imply you have to import some obscure file with tftp - you don't but...), however the unit does have good range and works (No RADIUS of course) in a basic config. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. They work well for me By Veijo N. Jones I have six of these installed in my main office and three outdoors to connect several buildings. I'm not sure why the other reviews are so negative. On the indoor six units I'm running RADIUS authentication on a Windows 2003 network and it works flawlessly. I've had to adjust the power output for each unit so they don't over-reach. Users can roam the building and stay connected with no problems. The outdoor units are running in AP/Bridge mode and have been trouble-free. I'm not convinced the external 9db antenna really adds much more range. Be sure you're using the latest firmware which resolves a DHCP error. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Needs a repeater to work well By Robert Solomon I bought this access point to provide wireless coverage to a 2 story colonial house. Even with a Netgear ANT24D18 Ant 18DBI Patch Panel attached, it provided less coverage than what I was using before, a Netgear WPN802 v1. What I am using now is this WG302 w/ ANT24D18 patch panel as the access point, and the WPN802 as a repeater. This is working well. See all 14 customer reviews...

Solid access point when on the latest firmware By Matt C Cisco had a lot of bugs with early firmware, since this is their first Linux based access point. However, if you run their latest firmware (1.9 as of this writing), the device is rock solid. I replaced some older 2.4GHz-only access points with the AP541N, and so far, it's been great. I'm running this in 5.0GHz mode (802.11a/n) due to local interference on the 2.4GHz band. Note that this access point, while claiming to be dual-band, has only one radio. This means that it can only operate one of the frequencies at any given time, so you can run it in 2.4GHz mode *or* 5.0GHz mode, not both concurrently. If you still have older 2.4GHz clients (802.11b/g), you will need to either run this AP in 2.4GHz mode, or run a second AP to support the second frequency. For advanced users, this device has a couple neat features. First, it can run a number of SSIDs concurrently, each with different security models, and associate them with VLAN tags. On our network, that enables us to run a "Guest" network with limited access to resources, along side our "Internal" network. It can also replicate it's config to multiple AP541N access points within the same network, enabling you to manage them as a single mesh, without having to purchase the complex (and much more expensive) managed wireless infrastructures. FInally, it runs the Linux OS on a Cavium MIPS CPU, and has a full SSH daemon and busybox shell environment, so I'm sure there's some creative modifications that an advanced user could run on this access point. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Works as advertised By Nathan Stone We wanted to move to 802.11n in the 5GHz frequency and ended up going with two of these in a busy medical practice. I love the fact that I only have to configure one unit and the other automatically updates its settings. We have had no performance issues and are getting ready to purchase three more once our new construction is completed. I wish they made this with dual radio's so that I could run 2.4GHz for our guests and smart phones to use while the staff used the 5GHz with their laptops and tablets. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Upgraded the firmware, then works beautifully! By Russell Had a few minutes of trouble at first, but after upgrading the device to the newest firmware, this thing runs like a champ. I am considering replacing all of our old AiroNets with Cisco Ap 541N access points. It has been going solid for 4 months without a single blip. See all 6 customer reviews...

Hazard This review is primarily for home owners who are considering this device. The Cisco Aironet 113x WAPs are solid, professional devices. The 113x's are very configurable, and provide an exceptional feature set, reliability and distance -- even in congested areas. BUT: they require a very tech savvy consumer to configure them properly. Tech Notes: - This devices does not include a DHCP server -- the default config uses the DHCP server on your wired LAN -- there is NO default IP address. - If default configuration does not work, you will need to use the console interface -- you'll need a serial connection and understanding of telnet. - Securing the device requires an understanding of the difference between WEP and WPA and use of hex keys (no ASCII) If any of the above is confusing or scary, you might consider one of the Linksys WAPs (Linksys was recently purchased by Cisco). They tend to be more sensitive to traffic congestion and have lower range, but they are much easier to configure. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Previous Reviewer is Incorrect or Unexperienced with Cisco By Greg M. Trzaska The previous reviewer is incorrect with saying the 1131AG can not support even open wep. The Cisco Aironets are some of the MOST configurable AP's out there! They are NOT easy to set up, and without using CLI, they are even more difficult. Cisco's Aironets are great, reliable, and work extremely well. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Perfect for Business and Tech-Savvy Home Users By Aaron Hall If you're buying this for use at home and you're not a tech-savvy Cisco/Network geek, save your money and stick with Linksys access points... or at least be prepared to have a network geek swing by to configure it. That said, if you're tech-savvy or using this in a business environment with a good IT person on hand, these AP's are absolutely perfect in terms of functionality and form-factor. Configuring them is a bit intimidating at first, because there are TONS of options and features in the web interface menus, and you do have to do some hunting, because it's not all organized very well. However, rest assured that everything you'll ever want to do with these AP's (including private/guest VLAN options) can most certainly be done. As for the open WEP claim in the one review, I'll add my assurance that the claim is false. It does support WEP, but WEP is such a horrible encryption standard, and you should really be using WPA or WPA2. See all 5 customer reviews...

Cisco RVS4000 4-port Gigabit Security Router - VPN

As broadband speeds increase most 10/100 gateways do not have the power to support those higher data rates, and thus become the bottleneck in the network. The RVS4000 10/100/1000 4-Port VPN Router works at Gigabit speeds to meet the demands of todays networks. It features Linksys proven SPI Firewall with an integrated Intrusion Detection and Prevent System (IDS/IPS). Its built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch can connect up four PCs directly, or additional hubs and switches. The QoS features provide consistent voice and video quality throughout your business. In addition the RVS4000 features a Virtual Private Network (VPN) security engine that creates encrypted IPSec tunnels through the Internet. The IPSec VPN tunnels enable remote users from at home, or on the road to easily, and securely connect to the office network through a typical wired or wireless broadband connection. When used with another RVS4000 or other Linksys VPN router, branch-to-branch connections can be established allowing users in a remote office to connect to the corporate network.

Kitashiro I purchased the RVS4000 primarily due to its gigabit WAN port; very few wired firewalls have a gigabit WAN port. Not having a gigabit WAN port is a reasonable design because WAN ports in many SOHO firewall applications will likely connect to T1 (1.5 Mbps) or T3 lines (45 Mbps) at most. Since these data rates are lower than that of an ordinary 100 Mbps ethernet port, a gigabit WAN port is more than what is required of a WAN interface. However, I wanted to use a firewall/router on the network inside of my primary NAT/SPI firewall which is primarily a gigabit network. So, a gigabit WAN port was an important feature because it needs to connect to a gigabit switch (not a WAN link). Before my purchase, I read many customer reviews that complained about slow data rates through the WAN port. These reviews were very discouraging since the Linksys had a gigabit WAN interface. This was until I found a benchmark test that explained the negative reviews. The RVS4000 (primarily due to its industrial-grade security features) has a WAN to LAN data rate of 15.9 Mbps; very slow for a gigabit interface. However, this can be improved upon by configuring (turning off) the security features of the firewall. Unless you configure the firewall as a non-gateway device, don't expect orders of magnitude improvement in speed. Here's the good news. The benchmark clocked the RVS4000 LAN to WAN data rate at 530 Mbps. Since many disk drive interfaces do not have a sustained data rate this high; you will not see this number when transfering files. I have a couple NAS RAID boxes with gigabit interfaces that top out at around 100-150 Mbps (individually). I can get higher network utilization numbers when doing several files transfers between different network endpoints simultaneously. Network file transfers tend to be very CPU intensive, even when using SCSI hard drives. The CPU intensive part comes from having to package up the data into IP packets and managing the data transfer. The bottom line is that I am very satisfied with this firewall and its gigabit WAN port. But understand that it needs to be configured properly to optimize its performance and functionality. You don't need to be an engineer or rocket scientist to do this; however, you will need a bit of understanding about IP networking. If you use the RVS4000 as a primary firewall (configuring all of its security features), I suspect it will do that job rather well also. 22 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Multifunctioned Gem with QoS and Jumbo Frame Support! By Perceptive Reader I am baffled by the other reviewer’s comments – the Linksys RVS4000 router is an advanced, integrated router, a firewall and a 4-port full duplex gigabit switch that will satisfy most home offices and home networks. It is economical as it replaces two devices the router and switch, and offers gigabit speed. Nothing else on the market will do this. The RVS4000 is a gem that supports QoS allows parents to regulate their children’s internet and network access. Heck, the thing even supports jumbo frames unlike a lot of expensive managed 10/100/1000 managed switches; although the MaxFrame feature default is set to 1518 (disabled), and must be manually set to 9600 to get the benefit. Otherwise, the RVS4000 worked great for me. 24 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Works Great & No Problems Setting It Up By David A. Lessnau I've had this Linksys RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN for a little over two weeks now. I had no problem setting it up and I've had no problems with it operationally. My old Belkin F5D8230-4 Pre-N Router would freeze up every three or four days. This RVS4000 has worked continuously without problem. A couple of very important points, though: - First, there's a firmware update available on Linksys' site

Solid performance for small networks By Michiel de Bruijn The NetGear FS108 is a great Fast Ethernet switch for small workgroups, featuring a sturdy construction (from the metal casing to the RJ45 connectors) and excellent performance. Packet forwarding rates are what you would expect for under 10 dollars per port, and I experienced no problems whatsoever in hooking up machines with many different brands of network cards. Even mixing cards with different speed ratings caused no issues, unlike with some other cheap 10/100 Ethernet switches I could mention. The only concerns I have with this unit are that it sometimes seems to forward certain unicast packets to all switch ports for no apparent reason, and that it runs extremely hot, as another review already mentioned. As for some negative points mentioned by the other reviews: the switch works just fine with non-Windows machines (I would expect someone running multiple OSes to be able to troubleshoot simple connectivity issues, without resorting to technical support, which typically tends to be "Windows only" for pretty much *any* product...) and, while indeed not supporting full-duplex 100Mb/s non-blocking switching across all ports concurrently, this is not something you would expect from a workgroup-class switch anyway, nor something most users will ever need.In short, if you're looking for an affordable way to build a well-performing small 10/100BaseT network, the NetGear FS108 is the way to go! 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great Switch! But runs HOTTT! By Ronald Mendoza Features 8 ports of 10/100 Full-duplex ability. It comes in very durable metal casing and feels somewhat heavy. It is truly plug and play. Compared to my generic (TrendNet 5-port 10/100 full-duplex switch) it blows it out of the water. I get better pings across my home network and when loaded with 7 computers transfering files at 100mBits full-duplex it shines! The only con is that it runs HOT! Be sure to place it where it can breathe and not next to anything heat-sensitive. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Nice Switch! By Mark Weakley This is a great product. I would highly recommend it. You can easily put it anywhere. Never had any problems with it. Nice form factor, and great LEDs to let you know what is going on with it. See all 29 customer reviews...

They come with a 3 year warranty last I checked and are good quality for the most part. I see quite a few complains listed here but my thoughts are as follows: I have purchased about 40 of these access points and have only had to RMA 5 of them because I use them in "client access mode." For some reason they seem to just quit functioning correctly after a while. Most of you will use "access point mode" so nothing to worry about. I have had most in access point mode and they've been running 2.5 years + non stop with no issues. Also, go to D-Links website and download the latest firmware revision of 2.10 if the router doesn't already have it. You can configure the access point via a web browser or you can download D-Link's Airplus Extreme AP Manager off their site too. For ease of use stick with the web browser since it doesn't require the software although for simple configuration the AP Manager is preferred especially if your doing more than one. Lastly, these access point used in client mode can (for those not familiar) be used as an "external" wireless card. What's the benefit to this? Instead of having a performance killing PCI card these are better and more stable in my professional opinion. We had issues with D-Link and Orinico PCI cards locking computers up. Some conflicts with certain Southbridge motherboard chipsets. Long story... Also, I do use these in Point to Point and repeater modes and as long as your running the latest firmware revision you should have no problems. Hope this review helps at least one person. 11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Supports bridging, just like it says. By Trevor M. Wise I picked the DWL-2100AP because the documentation read that this unit supports 5 different operating modes. The mode I was interested in was the Point-to-Multipoint bridging mode. I've heard this type of configuration can be very tricky and I was a bit skeptical about getting it to work. Much to my surprise, the first test I ran went very well: This type of setup requires multiple AP's - one to act as a base, and the others to pick up the signal from remote locations. First, I setup 2 AP's and configured them each for the bridging mode (the base set to PtMP Bridge - the remote set to PtP Bridge) Then I set the D-Link on my roof (with the aid of the DWL-P100 - Power over Ethernet Adaptor) and drove to a friend's house about a ¼ mile away. I pulled out a laptop running Netstumbler (www.netstumbler.com) to see if I could pick up the signal. If conditions were absolutely perfect, I picked up on occasional `blip' - not nearly enough to maintain a connection. Then I hooked up a second DWL-2100AP (preset to the same SSID) to bridge the connection. The initial results were awesome. As soon as the remote access point powered on, it bridged the connection to my base station. Netstumbler only picked up the remote AP (since I was right next to it) but I confirmed that the bridge was working by hitting Amazon.com. All this was done using the standard out-of-the-box antennas. I was truly impressed. I was inspired to try this project by Jeff Duntemann's book, "Jeff Duntemnn's Wi-Fi Guide, Second Edition" (ISBN: 1932111883). Eventually, I will put the AP's in a weather-proof housing and add external antennas. The only downside I can think of is the fact that D-Link does not have very good documentation - in the box or on the web. I've come to learn that many Wi-Fi vendors lack in this area, so D-Link is no worse than any others. The ease with which I set up the Bridge was astounding. D-Link does a great job of making their equipment easy to use! 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. One of the most Easy to use Wireless Access Points By Ricky T. This is a very robust AP for any business-class upgrade By Marvin Lee Jr. D-Link makes several Airpremier AP devices. This one costs less because it runs on a slightly non-standard power device. The POE feature may be difficult to implement in some wiring closets because the device draws too much current. As long as you are able to utilize the little 2.5+ AMP power brick, you'll have zero problems setting up a powerful wireless network. The firmware on the several units I bought were all up-to-date, an unexpected pleasure. You can deploy the unit by simply resting it on a desktop or shelf, but you can get better signal penetration sometimes if you mount the chassis on a wall or beam higher up in the air. Programming is via a browser interface. The software appears to be a form of Linux. I've deployed several of these with great results. This type of AP is vastly superior to those "toys" that you buy for fifty bucks. If your needs are more serious, you can't go wrong with one of these. The construction quality of the plenum rated metal chassis, painted in a beautiful dark gray metallic finish, is fantastic. Almost as fantastic as Amazon's fast order fulfillment! The machine comes packed in a plain brown box that's folded internally to hold the components, and be ultra strong. It includes a strong wall mounting bracket with versatile hardware for vertical mounting ease. IMPORTANT setup note: Even D-Link's website implies that this device can support a "guest" network as in the Apple Airport Extreme N router/AP. This is not entirely true. OUT OF THE BOX this is not possible. You'd have to have an enterprise class AP control system on your premises that supports creation and management of Virtual LANs. So if you have a small office in need of a guest network for your visitors, better to look elsewhere. Otherwise, you'd need to buy a pair of these great APs to do this nifty trick! Or get an Airport Extreme and hope it survives industrial use. (Personally I'd invest in TWO Air Premiers.) See all 4 customer reviews...

By Benjamin Michael Chan Unit is solid and sturdy and has a bit of a utilitarian look to it. The software that comes with it lets you manage multiples of these devices at a time at a layer 2 level, meaning even if you don't know what it's IP address it, it'll find it and you can set it. I had never setup WPA enterprise before, so it took a little bit of googling and trial and error, but I did get this going. Device seems "faster" than the Linksys WAP54G we have been using. By Jose Ramirez I have had this access point for a year now. I have only had to restart it once and I think it was because of instability in the LAN in general. It works 100% of the time. I configured it via its web-based interface and never had to touch it again. In the reliability department it is just 110% excellent. Feature-wise is also 5 stars. I won't mention everything because you can see detailed information in the DLink website, but you can secure it using various protocols, you can exclude specific MAC addresses, and the AP logs everything. I have not used it, but the AP can log directly to a server (SQL server, I think). It doesn't say anywhere, and I had to ask DLink support about this: It supports 64 simultaneous clients and its range is VERY good. I use it indoors in a 2-story house. The device is in the second floor, near the center of the house (which is about 10 meters wide and about 18 meters deep) and it covers indoors entirely, both floors! Conceded, on the first floor there are spots where I get a poor signal, but even with poor signals, I am never disconnected and I still get 11 MBps, which is way more than enough for Internet browsing (I have cable, 2 MBps, that translates to 230 kb/s approx.). And let's have a look at the price: AMAZINGLY CHEAP! If you cannot cover your house with one, then get 2! If I ever have problems in an area, I'm sure I'll buy a second one without a second thought. This thing is rock-solid, the mounting is discrete, the antennas can be positioned, you can configure which antenna to use... I'll stop now because it is never-ending. :-) Buy with confidence!
