Netgear ProSafe FS108P 10/100 8-port Desktop Switch with 4-port POE

The ProSafe FS108P provides power and data from a single point, using Power over Ethernet (PoE) over a single Cat-5 cable. The eight Fast Ethernet ports can be used for any 10/100 Mbps link and four of these ports can supply industry-standard IEEE 802.3af power. Advanced auto-sensing algorithm gives power only to 802.3af end devices, so no need to worry about damaging proprietary PoE or non-PoE equipment. In addition, it discontinues the power when PoE devices are disconnected.

Cisco-Linksys Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit

The Linksys Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit lets you put your access points almost anywhere, by removing the requirement of nearby power outlets. By using the existing Category 5 Ethernet cabling to deliver power to any standard 5 volt access point or other network device, you save the time, hassle, and expense of running AC power to the access points installation location. The best position for a wireless access point is usually on the ceiling, in the center of the area to be covered. Second best would be high on a nearby wall. Unfortunately, theres usually no easily accessible AC power plugs available in these locations. With the Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit, installing the access point in these preferred spots becomes far less trouble.

Only complaint is that they didn't offer it two years ago... By HW/SW Engineer Perfect, simple product for the nagging problem of getting line voltage near your electronics. Other versions have been available from other sources for a while now, and you could always roll your own, but this is a nice, elegant, reasonably priced package that does precisely what it should do. By the way, the other reviewer's comments about mixing 5 volt and 12 volt components is incorrect. You should NOT use a 5 volt power source with a 12 volt device. Granted you *probably* won't damage it, but IF it works - which is unlikely - it will probably be unreliable. I'm an Electronics Engineer with over 25 years of career experience; it's up to you whom you should trust! 26 of 38 people found the following review helpful. 5 Volt Only - won't work with WRT54G v.2 or WRT54G"S" By Matthew J. Nelson The newer Linksys products including the WRT54G v.2 use a 12 volt power supply and will not work with the WAPPOE. Linksys lists on the product page for the WAPPOE that it will work with the WRT54G but in reality it will only work with the v.1 and v.1.1 that use a 5 volt power supply. From the Manufacturer The first of the Green Ethernet products the DGS-1016D provides 3 key benefits to end users through its cutting edge innovative technology Reduces power consumption & creates less heat Extended product life Reduces Operating Costs Power Savings by Number of Connected Ports and Link Status Computers do not require Internet access all the time; neither do switches utilize all ports at all times. When a computer or network equipment is shutdown, switches often remain on and continue to consume considerable amount of power. With Green Ethernet technology, D-Link switches can automatically detect link status and reduce power usage of ports that are idle. Computers or any connecting parties set to standby mode (not power off), however, will not provide significant power savings. Power Savings by Cable Length The Green Ethernet switches have the ability to analyze the length of any Ethernet cable connected to them for adjustment of power usage accordingly. Shorter lengths require less power. Overall Power Savings Per Day For a traditional switch, power consumption remains constant even when the ports are not in use. In a standard workday scenario where PCs are used for 10 hours a day and powered off 14 hours a day, and connected to the switch using 20 meter cables, D-Link's Green Ethernet can save up to 20%* power used for each system. Note: Switch uses switching power adapter. The cable length which PCs are connected to switch is 20m cables. When your home network grows too big By klin When my home network got too big, I decided to wall mount a Cat6 patch panel and 1gb router (see my other reviews). This has been working without problems since I installed it in my home network September 2008. After plugging everything in (I don't even know what's on the included CD), I was pleasantly surprised to see that two of our machines (laptops) had 1gb networking. There are however two things to be aware of: 1) If you wall mount the router like I did, there is not enough clearance behind the unit for the supplied power cable (a normal straight one). Get the slimmest right angle power cable you can find. I needed even a bit more clearance which I achieved by shimming the router away from the face of my 4U wall mount with a few small washers. While not egregious, this was annoying. This could have been easily avoided by the manufacturer, if they had supplied a right angle power cable with the proper clearance. 2) The fan is noisier than any PC or digital device I have in my house. This doesn't matter to me since it is in my basement, but if for some reason it was in habitated space, it would definitely bother me. So besides the initial clearance problem, I have no qualms. 7/28/10 Update - Product still performs well. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great product By Jose Ramirez I have had this gigabit switch for around 3 weeks now. It works as desired and setup is, well, trivial. Just remember that this switch is UNMANAGED, so no VLAN's or anything like it. I was also afraid it would be noisy because of its fan, but it turned out to be very quiet as well. I strongly recommend this product. By the way, this switch came to replace an old D-Link 10/100 hub that worked almost non-stop for 7 years! I have no doubt of D-Link's quality, at least so far. Finally, I must say that so far I have no complaints on this product, not even the slightest. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Solid performer in a small form factor By Ron Lockhart I've outgrown my SMC Barricade router and decided to extend my network with a 16 port gigabit switch. I was originally going to go with the Linksys switch, but the reviews were universally bad and reported failure rates very high. I wanted to take the time to set this up and forget it, and while I've only been in production with it for less than 24 hours, it is working well and set up easily. I think the documentation is pretty clear, but if you're not technical, you'll have a bit of trouble figuring out some of the advanced features. One feature I liked is that the ports are auto-detecting regarding whether a cable is a crossover or straight through, just like a more expensive switch. You can't manage this switch by forcing the the ports into a configured state (auto detect vs. or manually configured), but that would have been overkill for me. My setup is an Apple Time Capsule (version 1) as my router and wireless. I'm using a straight-through cable to connect the D-Link switch to the Time Capsule, both of which are gigabit. If this is the type of setup you're thinking of installing, this D-Link switch appears to be the perfect fit. I can only hope the reliability is better than the Linksys, but according to all the user reviews I've read during my research, this is the preferable unit. Hope this helps! NOTE: I'm revising this review after using the switch for several months now. Absolutely no problems, even though I've made changes to my network. The only thing I'd add to my original review is that the fan on the switch is a bit noisy. If you want this to be located in your office, be aware that the fan is always on and is audible. Other than that observation, I would still recommend this switch. See all 7 customer reviews...

It was under multicast. I had to set all of the ethernet ports to static. Other then that it worked perfect. Also this switch comes with 3 years hardware and 5 years of phone support from Cisco. They have people on the phones 24x7 which is awesome. And to top it off, the people you speak with are American! 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great Small Switch By AgedWireHead The Linksys SRW208P (and its 16 and 24-port cousins) are great switches. The power-over-Ethernet feature is well designed, even recognizing that an old (pre-standards POE) Cisco phone is plugged in and properly feeding it power! Quality-of-service is appropriately and automatically configured for VOIP on the switch. Add an appropriate UPS to power the switch, router, and cable/DSL modem, and a home or small office VOIP setup takes a large step toward reliability. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Works fine, but web UI requires IE By Carlos Alvarez This would be a five-star product, except the web interface won't work with anything other than IE. We don't have any Windows computers, so we can't run IE. I'm shocked that in 2011 there are still products that require IE. Leave it to Cisco, often a great product, but sometimes makes you wonder what they were thinking. Functionally it works well, powers everything fine, and performs well. We're using it with Linksys/Cisco IP phones and several brands of IP cameras. See all 4 customer reviews...

Great for its intended use By Tom Carpenter This is an unmanaged switch, which means that you can not configure Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANS) or Quality of Service (QoS) - though QoS is supported through the implementation of 802.1p, but all the attached devices must support 802.1p in order to use it. Since there is no configuration, all you have to do is plug it into power and plug your devices into it. It really is that simple for any unmanaged switch. It will automatically allow all your devices to talk to each other at the physical layer. Of course, your applications must be configured right to talk to each other, but these unmanaged devices make building the infrastructure a snap. In answer to a previously posted review, I tested this device in the following way: -Port 1 connected to my desktop computer with a Gigabit network interface card (NIC) -Port 2 connected to a 10/100 switch which was connected to a gigabit ethernet storage device -Port 3 connected to a second DGS-2208 switch which was connectedto the exact same model gigabit ethernet storage device -Port 4 connected to a laptop with a 10/100 NIC The point of this setup was to use the identical computer communicating with identical devices through a 10/100 connection and through a gigabit (1000) connection. I transferred a 10 GB file to the ethernet storage device through the gigabit connection first and then I transferred the exact same file through the 10/100 connection. The GB connection was about five times faster. Now, this proves that the switch does not automatically throttle back to the slowest "connected" device. However, it does not indicate whether the gigabit connections will slow to the speed of 10/100 connections if those slower connections are actually active. To test this, I transferred the same file from the laptop to the slower connected ethernet storage device while also transferring the file from the desktop to the faster connected ethernet stoarage device. The results? The gigabit connected devices still transferred the data at rates faster than possible on a 10/100 connection. This proves that the gigabit speeds are still achieved even when a 10/100 connection is active. In the end, due to memory and processor limitations, this device cannot even compare to enterprise-class gigabit switches from Cisco and other providers; however, it is the best performing gigabit switch I've ever seen for under $75. Unmanaged means that the unit does not have an ethernet interface that can be used to prioritize traffic flow. Unmanaged switches are by far the most common type, and for most residential applications will do the job for significantly less money. The switch operates at full speed, and I haven't had any signs of 100 Mbp/s devices causing it to slow down other devices. I checked this, and it operates each device plugged into it at full speed regardless of the speed of the other devices. Some people say it does slow down, so perhaps there are multiple revisions out there. The two that I have were purchased in August 2007 and do not have a problem with this. The ports are well spaced, and it is easy to plug in and remove cables, even ones with plastic overmolded snagless heads. I've had other switches in the past that had the ports so close together that I started leaving every other port open just to get some space. That is not the case with this one. I have two of them, with one up in my office and the other in the basement wall-mounted beside the wiring closet. The basement unit is the primary backbone for my home network, so it gets a heavy workout. The ability to wall mount them is a nice option. One thing about these switches is that the primary processor in

I wanted a network security camera so I could learn more about the technology in video surveillance. So having options like interchangeable lenses, I/O ports that can facilitate alarm system triggers, turn lights on and off from the camera web interface, two way voice, controls for mounting on a Pelco pan/tilt base to control movement remotely, and PC-less event recording directly to Network Attached Storage via integrated Samba client makes this camera a winner for my needs. So it does not need a pc to work. Authentication process requires a user name and password set by the camera's administrator. Here is a quick undocumented tip and or trick, if you need or have the desire to allow everyone to view the camera you can remove the user information from the demo account. You can view the video from your own home network or you can configure your router to view and control the camera from computers or cellphones on the internet, without dependence on any third party web sites or subscriptions. I also must give credit to the NETGEAR WNR3500L RangeMax Wireless-N300 Gigabit Router with USB as it was easy to setup the camera to be connected from the internet. It performs better than average for a wireless camera in it's price range likely because of the MIMO technology. I have not seen any other wireless security camera offer this feature. Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) technology is a wireless technology that uses multiple transmitters and receivers to transfer more data at the same time. MIMO technology leverages multipath behavior by using multiple, "smart" transmitters and receivers with an added "spatial" dimension to dramatically increase performance and range. MIMO allows multiple antennas to send and receive multiple spatial streams at the same time. This allows antennas to transmit and receive simultaneously. I've not had connection drops or slower video on this system and it's more than 75ft away from the wireless router on a different floor. If you decide to go with a network cable install it also supports POE Power over ethernet which is very cool. From my understanding the POE function does not work while the camera is in wireless mode. I love the freedom of wireless personally and you can put the camera almost anywhere. It does not have to be permanently in one location because of cables. It is very well built and feels pretty heavy and solid. It is longer than I thought around 8 inches long and 3 to 4 inches wide. In order to protect the camera from electrical surge(s) and or unexpected lost of power I put the unit on a small ups. I can't tell you how many devices fail or die to soon because they are not properly protected (Best Buy had a CyberPower - 425VA SL-Series Battery Backup System for 29.99). Also if you unplug the camera or experience a power

With a gigabit uplink to your home network instead of the 100Mbps links most home APs use, it is great for high-bandwidth connections to wired systems such as home media servers. It has great range, great security, and the web interface is user-friendly. The latest firmware update on their web site provided bugfixes for some issues I had with it (as it shipped with older firmware) and the firmware was straightforward to install through the web interface. The device also has a variety of modes including wireless repeater mode in case you want to extend your wireless network (and comes shipped in this mode by default) It is a swiss army knife of wireless bridges, and for the price, a completely great value. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. EnGenius WAP By Olga Brooks Very easy install. When configuring EnGenius device you have the option of: Access Point, Client Bridge, WDS Bridge or Repeater. I configured the device as a Access Point. Recieved message "Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network ....". To resolve this issue do the following on your computer: 1. right-click Wireless Network Connection icon 2. click "View Available Wireless Networks" 3. highlight 4. under "Related Tasks", click "Change Advanced Settings" 5. click "Wireless Network" 6. under "Preferred networks", click 7. click "Properties" 8. click "Authentication" tab 9. uncheck "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" Also, log into EnGenius device and verify "IEEE 802.1x" is unchecked: select "Security", then click "Wireless". 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Product! By D. Knight I purchased this because I needed to extend my 802.11n wireless network range to my workshop about 270 feet away from my router. I could get a signal at the edge of the workshop but not really usable. After a lot of research I decided on this product. It literally took about 5 min to configure this as a repeater. The interface is extremely simple and really does not require much advanced configuration even though it is available. After configuring I was able to connect to my network and browse at surprisingly fast speeds. I have not done actual benchmarks but I can tell you it is faster then I expected it to be. If you need a repeater to expand the range of your 802.11n network look no further you have found the device you need. See all 10 customer reviews...

Biba The Ubiquiti networking products offer astonishing performance at a very inexpensive price - but they are not for naive end users. They are designed to deliver high performance for network professionals at large scale. The Loco is specifically designed for wireless Internet providers to supply to their customers (preconfigured with specific installation instructions) for high performance access to a wireless network. These products are highly recommended if you are network knowledgeable or are prepared to do the self-education necessary to use them effectively. If you are a network professional, these are some of the best outdoor wireless products available at any price. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding product By Murray Every once in a while an amazing product comes along at an outstanding price. For me - this is it. I have no affiliation with the company other than owning two of their devices - the LOCO (NANO 2) and the NANO. My Loco is running firmware 3.5. These are amazing products. The durability is excellent, the performance is beyond any "consumer" product you will buy, and the configuration options are incredibly flexible - allowing you to tune the product to any network use. It can act as an access point, a client, or a bridge. As the other reviewers said, these are not consumer products - they are commercial grade (despite their incredibly reasonable price). So if you are not technical, find a buddy who is who can help you install it. There are also a few "quick-starts" that people have written - but they assume certain uses. It is best to have someone install it who really understands networking. To those who view the "difficult" setup as a "con" - you have to realize that the power of this product requires advanced knowledge. There is no way to sugar-coat and provide an interface usable by the novice without hiding a lot of the flexibility. It is like buying an MRI machine and saying "why isn't there a user manual that I understand"? Some preexisting background is required. Outstanding product. Keep it up ubiquity. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. recommended platform for dd-wrt By Joe B. Edmonds I chose this product because it's known to run the dd-wrt firmware. In addition to the (very reasonable) price for this unit, I paid for a dd-wrt license and followed reasonably-straightforward instructions to get it installed. Seems to run well. POE makes wiring easier. See all 10 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 38 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Cruddy Linksys Product - The others will see soon enough By Steven C. Tan Real quickly, I'm a network administrator for one of the largest websites in the US, so I'm not clueless when it comes to these devices. Like all the positive reviewers here, I was very happy with this unit when I first bought it. Worked like a charm, fast, cheap - what more could I ask for? Well how about a unit that didn't go belly up due to Linksys cutting corners on parts? Apparently some versions of the SD2008 and SD2005 had fans, but they have been cut out. Now these little buggers overheat, and when they do, it can cause capacitors to go bad which basically kill it's ability to operate in gigabit mode. In fact, several of my computers (and I've tried all sorts of NICs/computer combos) just repeatedly drop connection in a neverending loop. Nice work Linksys. I've read on forums that many others have the exact same problem - usually takes months for it to show up. One guy actually tore his apart, and saw the blistered/bulging components that had overheated and replaced them (hope you're handy w/a soldering iron.) 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. poor reliability / performance after only a few months of use. By goillini I work in systems/network support. Our department has bought 6 of these switches over the past year (not all in one purchase, but 1 at a time as needed). 3 out of the 6 have now failed as others have mentioned in their reviews. The switches worked great for the first few months, but suddenly failed. Post-failure, they provide a 'gigabit' link, but throughput is < 100 Kbps. If I could give this switch zero stars, I would. Don't waste your money on this switch. 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Low quality junk that will die on you By Jonathan Birge You'll get the switch, you'll love it and write a great review. Then in a few weeks or months it will start going flakey. Eventually it will die completely. You'll hate it. Do us all a favor and wait a few months before you a write a breathless review about how great this is, and you'll save a lot of people trouble. Cisco should be sued over the uniformly poor quality of these switches. Here's a hint: if a company like Cisco won't put their name front and center on a product, it's probably because they're cutting corners. LinkSys is the brand Cisco uses when they want to sell crap but don't want to tarnish their own image. Real IT people know the LinkSys is Cisco's code for "we really phoned in this one." Highly disappointed By E Crews Having more than 13 years under my belt as a multi-certified IT consultant often engaging projects independently or as the technical lead for clients such as JPMorgan-Chase, Walt Disney's EPCOT Center, Orlando International Airport, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, and more, I should have known better than to think this low-priced unit with such high-performance claims was too good to be true... and I would have been right. The goal was to bridge a network where the EOC-5611 and it's predecessor, the now discontinued EOC-5610, were 240 feet apart. With direct unobstructed line-of-sight, mounted atop a 25' mast, and fitted with high-quality ethernet cable, the signal began to fade at 100 feet and was completely degraded by 150 feet, regardless of band or antenna type used. The unit likewise performed as poorly when used as an access point. A good signal could be achieved between 80-100 feet, but dropped so significantly that a connection could not be made past 150 feet. In my tests, this unit failed to produce more than 10mW using the internal panel antenna and no more than 13mW using a 9dBi external omni-directional antenna for both the 802.11a and 802.11b/g bands - nowhere near the company's 600mW claim and more akin to consumer-grade indoor access points in the sub-$50 price range offered by LinkSys, NetGear, or Belkin. Interestingly, phone conversations with the technical support personnel at EnGenius revealed that the unit, when fitted with the external omni antenna mentioned above, could expect to reach only a maximum of 400mW and that the internal antenna was only for the 802.11a band... that an external antenna was necessary if one wished to use the 802.11b/g band. They suggested that I spend hundreds more per unit for a parabolic, yagi, or patch directional antenna to achieve a strong signal for the 240' distance I required. Amazing... the advertising boasts that this unit is "high-power" commercial-grade client premises equipment, easily capable of 1-30km transmission range. Yet, in reality, I can throw a baseball a greater distance than this unit can transmit a wireless signal! Based on the information presented here, at Amazon, and information and data sheets obtained at the EnGenius web site, I recommended this product to a client with a low-budget for the client/bridge solution. What should have been a quick and easy install resulted in many hours of on-site configuration and troubleshooting, and ultimately caused a strained client relationship. Although I salvaged the client, it cost me an additional $1300 to replace these units with a pair of D-Link DWL-2700AP's to do so. They work flawlessly and I have never looked back. If I could give Zero stars for this product, I would. Unless you love headaches, frustration, and losing clients... run away, run far away from the EOC-5610/EOC-5611. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Perfect "Long Range" WiFi Solution By Doug Hello, I do all of the IT work for a very large RV park and we have had major problems with WiFi in the past, but I've got to tell you; ever since I installed this unit in the park our problems are now only a distant memory. This pole mounted Engenius router (600MW Client Bridge/access Point), along with the right antenna, are absolutely the right choice for any of your long range WiFi needs. I paired this unit up with the "Hawking HI Gain Omni Directional Outdoor 15dBi Antenna" and set it up for a range of 2 kilometers. I set it at maximum power and I haven't

With a Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge in the garage, and another one (or a Wireless-G Access Point) in the house, you're connected--no digging trenches, and no overhead wires. Let the Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge from Linksys open up exciting new possibilities for your wireless network. See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies. Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere -- without wires. Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use. Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed. For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time: 802.11b 802.11a 802.11g 802.11a/g To learn about the differences between the standards and select the right one for your network, click here for an easy-to-understand chart.

By YourMileageMayVary If you are considering this bridge to do video/audio streaming inside your house, think again. This review is based on over 2 months worth of testing this unit and then working with Linksys/Cisco trying to figure why it does not deliver. A saleperson at a local store may have told you that you can stream MP3s over your wireless network, or perhaps you have two DVRs in your house and your want to stream recorded TV shows from one to another. This is not the device you want to use for this purpose. Don't belive me? Ask Linksys level 3 support. Its architecture is not designed to support high levels of network traffic needed for streaming -- it has very small or zero I/O buffers to handle it -- as a result, the device will crash after 2-5 minutes of streaming. You can power cycle it and it will resume for the next 2-5 min. But forget streaming for a moment, WET54G crashed when I was simply working from home VPN'd into my company. Not for that either?! Do you think that WET54G ver 2 is better than WET54G ver 1? Been there, don't waste your time -- the architecture is the same. Alternatives? WET54GS5 might be better, but I'm yet to find that out myself. I know you want to try it yourself. Piece of advice -- buy at a retail store, and if it doesn't work, return within 30 days. Do not get into RMA exchanges with Linksys - unless you enjoy 2 months of 2-3 hours/day trying to get your money back. 36 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Run far, far away from this By Andy I purchased a total of 4 of these units to replace a fleet of aging WET11 bridges (which I may add performed flawlessly in their years of service) at both my home and business. Immediately after setting them up I began to notice problems which required frequent rebooting of the bridges. After less than 24 hours, one of the units went completely dead and unresponsive, and since then one other has bitten the dust as well. I have wasted countless hours with Linksys support online, and was told that I should run WEP encryption on my network to help solve the problem, even though the main reason I bought the WET54G is because it supports WPA. Needless to say I returned all of the bridges for a refund. To make matters worse, now my old WET11 bridges are now also acting strangly (I'm guessing due to my WRT54G router's firmware upgrade that was suggested by the fine folks at Linksys). I have long been a fan of Linksys even though most other people seem to put them down. However, this product on its own has convinced me never again to do business with Linksys. If you are in search of a wireless bridge, do yourself a favor and go with the Buffalo WLI-TX4-G54HP wireless ethernet crossover, or else look into a WDS system. 34 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Replacement for WET11 By Book Reviews Weekly I bought this unit to replace my Linksys WET11. I was using the WET11 for my ReplayTV, but was converting all of my wireless network over to Wireless-G Only. Just so you know, I never use the CD that comes with these things. I just plug it in and view my router admin page to see what IP it gets (provided you are using DHCP). Then open a browser and type in the IP assigned to it. I have found this to be the easiest and quickest way to configure these. It takes about 30 seconds total. I am very happy with the WET54G - it works great with my ReplayTV, so if you have a ReplavyTV or a TIVO it should work fine. See all 157 customer reviews...

Saunders I had been looking at the FS116 for some time, hoping for the prices to come down. Recently, I was able to get one at a good price from Amazon so I jumped on it.This switch, unlike many of the Linksys products, is made of *metal*. It is VERY solidly built and quite small - not much taller than the network jacks themselves. It does not have any fans and runs only slightly warm to the touch.... EVERY port on this device is now uplink capable, not just one port "with a button" as the heading indicates. For me, this was a pleasant surprise as I have several ethernet cables that are designed for uplinking and with this switch, I can use them whenever I need to due to the auto-detection on all 16 ports.I really like that the LEDs and cables come-out of the front. The trend in consumer level devices is to put the cables on the rear. This does not work for me as I have my "network center" in the basement and all of the cables approach from the front (note, front-connect is how professional-level equipment is built and the fact that the Netgear uses that also harkens to their power-user-level equipment).Anyway, I have been using this switch transparently for a couple of months now. It functions just as a switch should: without a thought. It just works.Mike 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Low Cost, Works Well By lschofield I wanted to upgrade my home network from a 10M/sec hub built into my router to a 100M/sec switch. I probably could have gotten by with an 8 port product, but I've wired up a few outlets to a patch panel and didn't want to have to walk to the basement and patch around as I moved around the house. This 16 port version seemed like a good way to go.The product is very different styling than other Netgear products I have (not that I cared). It is small, not a much larger profile than the plugs themselves need, and the case is very sturdy and solid. With no fans, it makes no noise. My only negative comment is I would have preferred a standard 19 inch width for rack mounting, but others will prefer this more condense case. Fits on a shelf easy, or you could mount it to the wall with screws on the underside. And the end result -- much faster home network! This would be a good solution for anyone with a larger home or small office wired network, or someone who hosts LAN parties. 16 ports will connect a lot of people! 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Unethical Netgear Does NOT Honor Warranties By Tractor Tech The equipment is OK. I mean, not really much to go wrong since it's just a switch. The problem is Netgear will not honor the supposed lifetime warranty. Worse is they have you on hold for ever, bounce you from one tech (sorry, they call them "engineers" - an insult to real engineers everywhere) to the next. Finally they tell you the problem is software (even the power light does not illuminate yet somehow it's software, who'd a thunk it) and try and bill for premium support rates. When that was refused they hung up on me. So, yes, Netgear stuff might seem like a good deal but be prepared to replace it on your own nickel when it fails (mine lasted 8 months). We had two analog versions of the conference room phones prior to our Voip system. If you have wi-fi access points in close proximity to these phones you might have connection issues. The IP 7000 is okay, just cross your fingers that you don't have any problems with it that might require Polycom's non-existent customer support. Our company bought an open box model of this phone and it died shortly (1 month!)after the warranty period was over. I called Polycom just to ask some questions but Polycom doesn't provide support to end users, only reselllers. I found a local reseller who sent the phone to Polycom for troubleshooting and they deemed it un-repairable. When we got the phone back, Polycom had conveniently forgotton to include our A/C adapter. What a disappointment! If you are looking for a conference room phone consider other alternatives, Konftel and ClearOne are great alternatives and they are priced considerably less! Most helpful customer reviews 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Works as advertised By J. Wu ALthough I normally tend to stay with the Linksys/Cisco brand when it comes to networking devices, I have to say that I am somewhat surprised and pleased to find that D-Link seems to be improving and in some cases, outperforming Linksys. I needed a fast and easy way to extend my wireless internet to approx. 1000 ft and decided to try a variety of solutions to see what worked best. I initially tried using some Linksys range extenders (WRE54G) which soon proved to be a networking nightmare. The units did work although I had to reset them at least once every other day. Next, I tried using some Hawking range extenders such as the 15db corner antenna and the omni-directional antenna. Both seem to work fine however the range was still insufficient and placing multiple pole antennas would detract from the outside appearance of the building. Finally, I tried this D-link antenna and while this unit is expensive, it is well-made and appears to be very durable. With the built-in heater system, and weather-resistant casing, I'm also able to mount the antenna outside and not worry about the internal components being damaged from the cold temperatures. I will see after a couple of weeks whether it can withstand some light snowfall. Setting up this antenna/access point is relatively easy if you know networking basics. For users who are not too familiar with setting up static IP addresses, there may be an initial learning curve involved with this device. If you know what you're doing, you should be able to get this unit up and running in about 10-15 minutes. Unlike Netgear and some of the new cheaply made Linksys/D-Link routers and range extenders, this unit hasn't needed a reset and hasn't crashed or locked up on us in the two weeks it has been running. Pros: Well-constructed weather-resistant metallic casing, strong signals, STABLE, comes with all the mounting equipment you need including a 50 meter heavy-duty ethernet cable, looks a lot more professional and inobtrusive than the Hawking-brand range extenders Cons: Pricey (though you do get what you pay for), setup may be somewhat difficult for those who don't have much networking experience (there is no automatic install CD like the ones included with routers). I would have liked to have the ethernet port perhaps on the back or side of the unit rather than on the bottom because it's difficult to prop this thing up on a table with the ethernet cable in the way - in the event you decide not to mount it on a wall or ledge. Contrary to what D-link may tell you, you do not need to have a D-link router in order for this to work. This antenna connects to almost any router (I'm currently using a Linksys WRT54G). There is an extra step of configuration if you choose not to use D-link but if you know how to setup static IP addresses, you'll be up and running in no time. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Works as advertised By D. Ditzel This product works. I was skeptical because of the D-link brand, but this thing is great. I installed it to allow wireless @ our marina, and we get full signal over the entire area, just under 2 acres. The unit itself is made very well, everything you need comes in the box, POE, antenna's, cables, lightning protection, all there.. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Flynn I am computer literate and live in an apartment that hates any number of wireless frequencies. The other reviews for this router made it appear to be a good compromise - difficulty in set-up in exchange for awesome signal strength. Unfortunately I was unable to verify this as I never made it through the "set-up" process. The included documentation is sketchy, poorly laid-out, and very obtuse, and there is no simple walk-through for a home set-up. I've set up wireless networks before and have built my own computer, but I was completely defeated by this device. I do not recommend it except perhaps for the networking professional. Honestly, DO NOT BUY this product if that doesn't describe you. I am only giving it two stars because it does seem to have good signal strength - and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to return it to DBROTH. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Rock Solid. By William R. Hill It's challenging to setup, but once you get it, its a hot rod. Solid strong connection. Stable & Fast. Powerful signal. Works perfect in a 2600sqft two story house, extending even outside to poolside AND even better in a 10,000sqft building that I've worked in. Amazing range. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not functioning pretty good in WISP mode By F.D. I purchased this router to connect to my other wireless router which is far from one of my desktop computers and my TV. It only connects to my other router when it is next room and signal strength is over 45 otherwise it won't connect although the AP is shown in the list! Even I tried 3 different long range antennas to boost the receiving signals, but got worse and signals dropped even more. My old laptop wireless adapter has much better signal reception! I like this router because it has linux on and you can control it however you want, but unfortunately it is useless for me in the range I need. Almost paid 50 bucks with shipping but have to toss it into my closet and go for a long wiring! See all 5 customer reviews...
